Protests erupt outside Kasba Police station as 3 arrested in alleged Kolkata college gang rape
In a significant move on International Women’s Day, the Delhi government approved the Mahila Samriddhi Yojana, which promises a monthly financial aid of ₹2,500 to eligible women in the capital. The announcement came after a Cabinet meeting chaired by Chief Minister Rekha Gupta, finalizing an annual budget of ₹5,100 crore for the scheme’s implementation.
"This initiative is a step towards fulfilling our promise to the women of Delhi. By providing direct financial assistance, we are ensuring economic security, independence, and empowerment for women across the city," CM Rekha Gupta stated during the press briefing.
The scheme is designed for women aged 18 to 60 years who have a family income below ₹3 lakh annually and are not government employees or existing beneficiaries of other welfare programs. To ensure transparency and efficiency, the government will implement Aadhaar-based e-KYC verification, and a dedicated portal will soon be launched for registration.
A special committee led by Rekha Gupta, along with ministers Ashish Sood, Virender Sachdeva, and Kapil Sharma, will oversee the scheme’s execution. BJP National President JP Nadda welcomed the decision, stating, "This allocation of ₹5,100 crore is a testament to our commitment to women’s welfare."
However, the opposition Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) criticized the BJP-led government, accusing them of delaying the implementation and misleading women with unfulfilled promises. Former Delhi CM Atishi commented, "Women of Delhi were assured that ₹2,500 would be credited to their accounts by March 8. Today, they are still waiting for that message."
With Delhi’s political landscape heating up over welfare initiatives, the success of this scheme will be closely monitored in the coming months, as lakhs of women prepare to register for financial assistance under the newly approved Mahila Samriddhi Yojana.
